New Build: Alderwasley

Sympathetic stone and oak new build blending traditional and contemporary features.

This project came to us through an architect's recommendation, who had designed a comprehensive plan for a new house. Our client's brief required a design sympathetic to the nearby historic village hall, a fine stone building with detailed craftsmanship around windows, quoins, and gables.

We sourced and presented various local stone samples, ultimately choosing a coursed Derbyshire sandstone. Each stone was hand-tooled and individually shot-blasted for a buff-toned finish with darker browns and subtle pinks and reds. We provided a full cutting list for the stonemasons to ensure the build matched the architect's and client's vision.

Additionally, we designed and supplied a bespoke seasoned oak feature wall from ground to roof height, incorporating oak French doors. This feature had to align perfectly with the stonework, floor levels, and roof design. Our preferred joinery manufacturer supplied all bespoke oak doors, windows, and the staircase.

Client's Review

Clients review

'I first met Tom Allen when looking for someone to undertake the building of a new house. The house was to be built in stone and oak, combining traditional and contemporary features. We wanted it to fit into the landscape and to sit happily with the ancient building adjoining the plot.

Tom understood what was needed and readily grasped my ideas adding some of his own. He consulted with me each stage and sourced all the materials, having made sure they were what I had in mind.

Any difficulties that we experienced along the way were quickly sorted out and Tom found solutions that kept everyone happy. He coped well with the various authority figures who popped up with rules and regulations so that we were able to satisfy them without losing time. He is a pleasure to work with, always ready to tackle whatever you throw at him with good humour and a confidence that is not misplaced.

The end result is a beautiful house.'
