Using a System of Cladding the SIPS to Create the Effect of a True Timber Frame Building With Superior Insulation and Air Tightness
Having used the Kingpsan TEK SIPS system on a range of different projects, we proposed it for this timber clad garage and annex. We designed a system of cladding the SIPS to give the effect of a true timber frame building but having all the benefits of the Kingspan TEK high performance of insulation and air tightness going on behind the scenes.
All of the external timbers are ‘plant on’ and either plank form or ‘trenched’ to create corner details etc. and a ‘feather edge’ board was used for the main cladding detail. This gives the external façade all the appearance of an ‘oak framed building’ but remains more stable and has a much thinner overall composite of wall structure. We actually used locally grown larch as opposed to oak for all the external timber which is ‘silvering off’ nicely.
The rustic look continued inside the annex with whitewashed cladding and larch flooring. A pellet fired stove was installed which can be operated remotely from a smart phone for convenience. Underfloor insulation was continued through to the garage area and together with the outstanding U-Values of the walls gives a luxury environment for any garage/ workshop.
